DataStore in interview with Marcello Giacalone
Marcello Giacalone has supported DataStore’s cybersecurity team as a pre-sales engineer since August 2025. In this interview, he explains why he made the switch to IT security, how he helps our partners to protect their digital infrastructure and why a firewall is the best way to describe him.
Why and how did you end up in the IT industry and ultimately at DataStore?
I worked in telecommunications for many years, building up strong technical expertise and a wealth of experience in customer service. However, cybersecurity has always fascinated me because of its dynamism, its relevance and the degree of responsibility involved. After completing my certificate of advanced studies in cybersecurity, I wanted to put my experience to good use in this field. DataStore offered the perfect mix: innovative technologies, strong partnerships and an environment where I can combine my passion for secure IT architectures with hands-on customer service.
Which IT product best describes you as a person?
Probably a firewall. I am honest and direct, and focus on only letting the essentials through, i.e. creating clarity. At the same time, I remain flexible and open, as this allows me to meet new challenges. This is precisely what is crucial in cybersecurity: maintaining an overview, filtering risks and setting the right priorities.
How do you relax and enjoy yourself outside work?
I need exercise to help me clear my head. Whether it’s golf, tennis, padel, jogging or hiking, sport helps me recharge my batteries and maintain the balance I need. But I also enjoy quiet evenings at home, because this gives me time to unwind and let new ideas develop.
Hand on heart: what other important things should we know about you?
I enjoy taking on responsibility and working in a structured, goal-oriented and efficient manner. These are key factors when it comes to cybersecurity: you need to set priorities, make processes transparent and be able to rely on your team. It is important to me that people can talk to me openly. Honesty, reliability and a touch of humor are all part of it, as this creates trust and genuine cooperation including with our partners and customers.
Cybersecurity at DataStore: how exactly do you support companies?
We assist companies with the end-to-end development of their security strategy, from analysis and technical implementation to ongoing operation. This often starts with an assessment of their current situation: where are the risks? Which systems are exposed? And which measures bring the greatest benefit at a reasonable cost?
Our cybersecurity portfolio combines leading solutions for network security, cloud and endpoint protection, zero trust and monitoring, all of which are tailored to our partners’ individual infrastructure.
The goal is always the same: to reduce risks, ensure compliance and strengthen digital resilience.
What do you recommend companies do as a first step?
The most important step is transparency. Many companies don’t know exactly where they stand today. A security check helps to identify vulnerabilities, which can then be used to develop a prioritized roadmap. We support our partners in following this path in a structured manner from risk analysis to the implementation of specific protective measures.
