Interview with Daniel Wenger
Daniel Wenger has been PCO team leader at DataStore since November 2024. In this interview, he discusses numbers, coincidences – and why you can always count on him.
Daniel, how did you end up in IT and, ultimately, at DataStore?
I didn’t exactly take the direct route into IT. Originally, I was enrolled in a law degree with the intention of becoming a lawyer. But in the very first week, one of the professors teaching the Roman Law course said something that stuck with me: “Please be aware that, in your professional life, you’ll be dealing exclusively with language.” At that moment, I realized that I would be missing something – numbers. Before the break was even over, I had already packed my things.
After talking to friends and acquaintances – including someone from EMC – I quickly decided to study Business Information Systems. In parallel with my studies, I was able to gain some initial practical experience by participating in an internal migration project. What started as a vacation job soon involved working two days a week. And toward the end of my studies, EMC offered me the opportunity to join their pre-sales training program, which included an eight-week boot camp in Boston. I had a great time, learning a lot both professionally and personally.
When EMC became part of Dell, it opened a new chapter for me. I was lucky enough to stay within the existing network – setting me on a path that led to DataStore. The really nice thing was being able to continue working with so many familiar faces. I have been leading the PCO team since last year – a job that I really enjoy.
Which IT product best describes you as a person?
The calculator, hands down. You can count on me – both literally and figuratively. What’s more, though the calculator is quite simple, it can achieve a lot when used properly. I like to work meticulously, check the math, and make sure everything adds up. It has to be right – otherwise it won’t stop bugging me.
How do you relax and enjoy yourself outside work?
For me, sports are the perfect way to unwind – especially as part of a team. I love playing volleyball. It helps me clear my head and stay fit. And when I’m not on the court, I like to be in the kitchen, because cooking and baking help me relax.
Hand on heart, what other important things should we know about you?
If I could clone myself, I would still want my brain to be inside each of my clones – just so I wouldn’t miss anything.
